Collaboration helps you step out of your comfort zone and find new inspiration. I was given the chance to work on this wonderful project with Ert Theatre in Beverley and She Production drama group. We came up with a plan to deliver drama in the morning and visual art, with me, in the afternoon to four local primary schools. We worked with year 5 and 6 to investigate ‘Trailblazing Yorkshire Women’ and there stories. Alice Martha Bacon, Baroness CBE PC, Nicola Adams OBE – Olympian Boxer, Dr Karen Briggs OBE – Olympian Judo, Dora Thewlis – Suffragette, Lisa Muscarella – Firefighter, Beryl Burton – Olympian Cyclist
With props that had a connection to the Trailblazers the pupils made a design for an individual petal which would be added to the giant Yorkshire Rose. Each School had a colour them which represented the Olympian colours on the jersey which Beryl Burton wore. Like a jigsaw, the pieces would be added to the rose with final leaves which I painted there school logos and the Theatres onto with a centre circle in yellow of a painting of Beryl Burton.
This outreach project made great conversations, investigations, experiance and inspiration for the pupils involved. With a final QR Code to the right of the Rose, which you could log onto and hear the childrens discussion while in these workshops. The performance of Beryl Burton later was performed at the ERT.
