Designed and painted canvas petal
This five-metre circumference, giant, Yorkshire Rose installation was created through a collaborative project with pupils from five local primary schools. Each child designed and painted a canvas petal, contributing their own creative response to workshops celebrating some of Yorkshire’s most inspiring women.
Together, these individual artworks formed a powerful collective symbol of community, heritage and shared pride. Working in partnership with She Productions, the all-female company in residence at East Riding Theatre, we delivered workshops that combined performance and visual arts, encouraging young people to explore storytelling, creativity and local history.
The project focused on Beryl Burton, Yorkshire’s trailblazing cyclist who dominated British women’s cycling for over 25 years. Through learning about her determination and achievements, the children connected with an important part of their region’s sporting legacy, culminating in a shared celebration of her life.
