This commission was initiated by the hospital's arts team

The York and Scarborough Teaching Hospital commissioned these two internal murals to bring a colourful, connected, and positive focus to the Paediatric A&E department. This commission was initiated by the hospital’s arts team after receiving funding raised by a member of the nursing staff for her first boxing bout.

This gesture played a significant role in shaping the concept behind the design. Within such a large hospital, the strongest natural connection between departments is the people and the ways in which they support the care of patients and one another. Symbolic motifs are arranged in circular patterns to evoke a sense of togetherness and wholeness, while also acknowledging and showing respect for the individuals who make up the hospital community.

Throughout the hospital there are small, quiet seating areas integrated within the architecture. One area in particular is carefully and beautifully maintained on a voluntary basis by a member of staff. This space feels like a breath of fresh air for both staff and patients amid the routines of hospital life. Including it within the mural design celebrates the ways in which people often go above and beyond what is expected.
